I completely agree! First, strong classroom management is essential. Be firm on rules and expectations, and consider a one-on-one conversation with the student to understand their challenges better. This helps you build a personal connection and use positive reinforcement. Tailor strategies to the student’s age and type of disruption. For example, with middle schoolers, if Student Y stays on task for a set time, reward them with a positive note home. Expect setbacks, but address them by reinforcing class expectations and having a quick sidebar after class, or even a reminder before the next class begins. Small steps build progress!

Work to build a relationship with the disrupter. Have a one to one conversation with them. Listen. Share your perspective. Then come to an agreement that provides some win-win.

Prevention is Key Proactive measures: Implement strategies to prevent disruptive behavior, such as clear expectations, positive reinforcement, and engaging lessons. Individualized attention: Identify students who may need additional support or accommodations. Calm and Direct Approach Private conversation: Address the issue privately to avoid public embarrassment. Clear expectations: Remind the student of the classroom rules and expectations. Consequences: Be consistent with consequences for disruptive behavior.
