Handling clients who frequently shift their expectations can be challenging, but it’s all about staying flexible and maintaining clear communication. First, ensure you understand their evolving needs by regularly checking in and asking the right questions. Set clear boundaries on what’s achievable within a given timeframe or budget, and manage expectations by outlining potential impacts of the changes. Being adaptable while also guiding the client toward realistic outcomes helps keep the project on track, and fosters a stronger, more trusting relationship.

Stay adaptable but assertive. Document agreed-upon terms and revisit them regularly to create a baseline, then align any changes with clear consequences or adjustments in scope. Keep communication direct and focused on outcomes—like re-setting a compass each time you’re nudged off course.

It's critical that you implement feedback loops to ensure that you and your client stay aligned on the initiatives you are working on. It's also important to establish a clear scope of work from the outset to avoid any potential misunderstandings on what you were hired to do. Although we do need to be flexible and know that this may happen every once in a while, when this pattern becomes frequent, you have to make sure to proactively address it. I have found that this not only reinforces trust, but it also positions you as a strategic partner that is invested in their success.

When dealing with moved goalpost clients, keep the lines of communication clear and consistent. At each stage in the project, define what is to be expected; in other words, write down the goals of both parties. If there are changes to be brought forward, address them immediately by showing how that affects timelines, costs, or outcomes. Be flexible but set boundaries by offering solutions that will meet their changed needs without blowing the integrity of the project. The trick is to manage professionally, transparently, and proactively those shifting demands.
