To address a chronically late volunteer, start by having a private, respectful conversation to understand any underlying issues causing the tardiness. Offer flexible scheduling or role adjustments if necessary to accommodate their needs. Set clear expectations for punctuality and explain the impact of lateness on the team's reliability. Encourage accountability by establishing consequences for repeated tardiness while also providing support. Regular follow-ups can help ensure improvement and maintain a dependable service.

In this realm you are dealing with individuals who are giving their time out of pure generosity. They are not employees, they are volunteers. Volunteerism is at an all time low point in history and continues to go downward - this is understandable in the times we live in. Incentives show signs of uptake. You cannot expect anything more than what people can and choose to give. It is impractical and entitled thought that a volunteer should be giving more or performing more than what they can actually provide. If you dish guilt or expectations around a volunteer that is already struggling to give their precious time, you risk turning away the best of the best. Do not pressure volunteers, only praise them for their generosity and reward.

As a chronic issue, this needs to be addressed from a care position Have a meeting with me Make it a safe space where you are seeking to understand Tell them what it's about - the lateness Ask them to share what's going on for them Seek a mutual solution that will benefit the volunteer and the project You don't know what's going on with someone until you ask them and use a Coaching approach to help them come up with a solution and check for any support they may need. How you treat another is important and it's not about you but the difference you are all making and the why. If you need to be flexible with volunteers, then considering the right thing to do.
