In recruitment, it's not uncommon for candidates to reschedule interviews. When this happens, I prefer to reach out informally via LinkedIn to check if everything is okay. Life happens, and I’m flexible, but my personal limit is three re-bookings. Beyond that, it becomes a red flag. While I understand that things can be beyond our control, multiple cancellations stretch the benefit of the doubt. If the interview proceeds after the third reschedule, I address the cancellations directly. Candidates need to realise that frequent rescheduling can create a negative first impression, which may affect their chances. Remember that you only get 1 chance to leave a good 1st impression - so why no leave a positive impact?

I would start by reaching out to the candidate to understand the reasons behind their frequent rescheduling. During our conversation, I would gauge their genuine interest in the position. To encourage commitment, I’d propose a specific date and time for the interview. If their schedule remains a challenge, I might offer more flexible formats, like a phone or video interview. If rescheduling continues, I’d evaluate their professionalism and commitment to the process. Ultimately, if I still have concerns about their reliability, I’d focus on other candidates who demonstrate a stronger commitment to the opportunity.

I've encountered this situation many times and always assess each case individually. Recently, a great candidate called me, voice trembling, to inform me both his parents had been in a car accident, and he had just received a call from the hospital. Without hesitation, I told him to be with his family and thanked him for letting me know. A few days later, he reached out to reschedule, which showed his commitment. On the flip side, I've had candidates who repeatedly reschedule for no good reasons, or no reasons specified at all, at the last minute. I then ask if they're still genuinely interested in the role, as it's only fair to the candidates, clients, and myself as the recruiter.
