Women’s Leadership’s is essential. When dealing with community concerns about a new initiative it is importance to prioritise engaging closely with the community and seeking out those closest and most in touch with the core community concerns. My experience shows those folks with the most influence within a community are not always those with the loudest voices - but instead it is those with the deepest and enduring connections within the community - and these community connectors are often Women. Engage with the key Women in the community, listen to their views and bring their expertise and experience on board. Supporting and empowering Women & Women’s Leadership is the surest way to find positive solutions to community concerns.

This question is too vague. Who are the members of the community that are strongly opposed? Do they represent a large subset of the majority or are they simply a fringe group? While the interests of the few are still important, they also need to be tempered against the will of the many. That is what democracy is all about. Therefore, it is still important to engage proactively, and secure feedback. From there the creators of the policy can determine whether the proposed initiative is inclusive or exclusive, and modify the policy accordingly. Remember that policy is not law - exceptions are permitted. No one needs to be so inflexible that it causes outrage, but this goes both ways and the community needs to be flexible as well.

Start by reframing the question. What information, values and priorities does the community bring to the situation? Assuming here that you are in the role of the community, what if the question were instead: Proponents of a new public policy initiative resist incorporating the community's perspective. How can you navigate in the face of their strong push for this new public policy to find common ground? In any negotiation, you must be able to argue both sides in order to successfully advocate for your own.

Communities will become upset when decisions are made without informing them. A simple website with key points, information, newsletter updates, etc - these are all easily accomplished and will go a long way to avoiding an uncomfortable situation in the future.

This is tricky because engagement can be controlled and closed or open and dynamic. For example, there is a lot of control with a survey, but a lot less control in a public hearing. Depending on how sensitive the topic is, you may opt to have more input using closed engagement techniques and manage how you provide feedback from there. This is especially effective when you have very polarized groups that are unwilling to listen to one another. A survey or a poll gives each party equal weight without taking over the conversation in an open forum like a town hall when one person with a loudspeaker can drown out a quiet but nonetheless thoughtful contributor to the conversation. Social media is NOT effective here because it creates a vacuum.

The community’s concerns must act as a guiding light to finding compromise and solutions that will drive a positive outcome for all parties involved. Engaging with the community leaders will lead to constructive talks about West each side wants to achieve and how we can work towards a successful resolution of any concerns. As suggested, engaging and supporting the Women in the community is generally the surest path to finding constructive engagement and solutions. Women’s Leadership draws strength from constructive engagement and compromise. Supporting and empowering Women to take the lead on pursuing solutions is the most direct path to beneficial results for all stakeholders within the community and for those driving new initiatives.

Engaging constructively with the community and aligning a positive vision of how an initiative can benefit the community, as well as the external stakeholders proposing the new initiative, are the key factors driving a positive community buy-in for any new initiative that is being proposed. Working together with the community leaders - and especially by supporting and empowering Women within the community to take up leadership roles is the optimal path to take to ensure community buy in. Women are uniquely suited to leadership and bringing the community with them along a beneficial path. Women’s Leadership is an essential factor in providing substance to presenting the beneficial outcomes that a new initiative can bring for all.
