Tell the truth. Community members don’t generally know three things: - how expensive car infrastructure is (especially relative to other modes) - how much space cars and car infrastructure (like parking) takes up - that the rules reinforcing car dependency (like parking mandates and “level of service”) are arbitrary and anachronistic.

In my experience to gain community support for transportation solutions, focus on inclusive engagement, involving marginalized groups early and consistently through forums, surveys, and focus groups. Showcase tangible benefits with case studies and performance metrics, like how expanded transit improves job access for low-income areas. Adapt to feedback, integrating community input to build trust. Prioritize equity by addressing underserved areas, ensuring safer, affordable transit.

A technique that worked well with smaller groups is to ask on a scale of 1-10 how much they oppose it. This moves the conversation away from a binary choice and allows space for nuance. A follow up approach is to then ask what would make them move the dial towards less opposition. When I have done this people seem to work through their concerns rather than argue their point. Some people end up advocating for what you proposed initially. I imagine it is because some people feel like they have been pressured to make a binary choice on a topic they have never really considered before. It is not surprising they decide to stick with the devil they know and status quo wins. Providing safe space for people to think things through seems to work.

Best way to convince community about the solution is to show outcomes with that through success stories and effectively communicate them.

I will try to understand why they have doubts. I will present my judgment and analysis of the transportation plans I have proposed. I will also explain the benefits they will receive. However, if their concerns are genuine, I will work to incorporate them into my plan.
