Collaborating on a 3D modeling project?

I can share an example of a collaborative project I'm currently working on using Clo to develop an intimates collection. We have a Head of Design who oversees design direction, Techncial/3D designer responsible for accurate 3D mockups and patterns, and a Lace Designer responsible for lace motif. Regular input and communication between brings out the best of each individual skill set.

One thing I've found helpful is creating a detailed project plan that outlines responsibilities and deadlines. This plan should be accessible to everyone and regularly updated. Actually, I disagree with rigid roles. Flexibility is crucial. Team members should feel comfortable stepping outside their roles if it benefits the project, encouraging creativity and addressing unexpected challenges. An example I've seen is during a large-scale animation project where initial roles were well-defined, but adjustments were made to leverage each person's strengths more effectively, resulting in a higher-quality final product.

Schedule regular meetings to discuss progress, share feedback, and address any challenges. This keeps the team aligned and allows for quick adjustments to the workflow.

Communication that is all. It should never be complicated; the best approach is always having people who are working together to decide and approach the challenges together. Over producing can cause headaches at the end and a feeling of lack of ownership. Do not over intellectualize teamwork. It is just getting people together and having the goals presented clearly while having the team accomplish it through basic guidance. The moment the team is not functioning correctly is because someone within that team lacks decision making power. That is never the problem of the worker unless other issues arise. It is usually due to over complication of tasking and goal setting by leadership. Ownership is important in working as a team.

In an 3D modelling or any infrastructure project, clarity in roles and responsibilities is paramount. Each phase, from initial design to final construction, must have designated leads: designers, engineers, surveyors, modellers and project managers. Defining these roles prevents task overlap and allows team members to leverage their expertise. Crucially, appointing a project manager to oversee progress, coordinate tasks, and make executive decisions ensures streamlined workflow and project success.

1. In my experience, it's been beneficial to set up a central communication hub where all project-related conversations and files are stored. This ensures everyone has access to the same information. 2. I don't fully agree with relying solely on digital communication. While it's convenient, face-to-face meetings, even if virtual, are crucial for discussing complex issues and fostering team cohesion. 3. I've witnessed a scenario where a combination of Slack for quick updates, Zoom for detailed discussions, and Trello for task management kept the team aligned and ensured smooth progress on the project.

If more than 1 individual is working on a 3D model, it is best to draw out the model as clearly as possible so as to make sure all parties reach an agreement on how a model should look like. This is best done before making the model itself so that there will not be wasted effort or disagreement on style further on.

3D modelling is a visual process, so it may be beneficial to use video communication tools, especially under a remote working environment. Having the client, supervisor, and/or collaborators live on the other side of the screen enables a more direct communication to present and discuss the project's progress and challenges. Depending on the expertise of the other person, screen sharing with active control granted to the addressee is highly recommended here for them to explore the project in real time. For in-person meetings, casting the screen on larger devices allows a clearer, even immersive, view of the project.

Effective communication is essential for successful BIM projects. Utilizing tools like instant messaging, video calls, and project management software ensures all stakeholders are aligned. For instance, using Civil 3D for 3D modeling and Navisworks for clash detection allows for real-time feedback and file sharing. Regular check-ins and updates are crucial to promptly address issues and keep the project on track. BIM experts must coordinate design documentation, manage 3D models, and collaborate with engineers, BIM modeling peers and other disciplines to integrate all aspects harmoniously.

Communicate with images. As 3D experts we're used to thinking in 3D and in modeling operations. Most of the time our unexperienced customers or colleagues aren't able to do that. Make sure to use sketches and rough blockouts to communicate shapes and ideas effectively before putting in the big hours to keep the process smooth, cost effective and free of frustration.

Effective 3D Modeling project management relies on a robust file sharing and organization system. standard work flow need for it. Like BIM . Using cloud storages like Common Data Environment (CDE) applications like Autodesk BIM 360 and Bentley Projectwise allows multiple users to access and update files from various locations. Clear naming conventions and version control ensure everyone works with the latest updates. Regular backups are essential to prevent data loss. 3D modelers or BIM professionals also coordinate design documentation, manage 3D models, and collaborate with other stakeholders and clients to integrate all project aspects seamlessly.

Google Drive. Its just the simplest and quickest option for my team. We all work remote, across a whole country. So its important for us to always have something where we can just dump files, but also have a clear history when x file was uploaded. Makes it also easier if specific revisions for such as a experiential activation is required

Its best to use the BIM methodology aproach, and to use a CDE (common data enviroment) for file sharing. The scope and size of the project will guide which software is best for each case. I recommend Microsoft Sharepoint and Bentley Projecwise.

From my experience, using a centralized cloud storage system with strict file naming conventions ensures smooth collaboration. This helps in quickly locating and identifying files. Contrary to popular belief, simply having cloud storage isn’t enough. Implementing version control practices is equally crucial to prevent any confusion from outdated files and to track changes efficiently. A good example is using Google Drive combined with tools like Git for version control. This setup has proven effective in maintaining organized, up-to-date files and ensuring seamless teamwork.

It is very important to provide constructive feedback with an objective point of view if you are been observant of where an artwork needs to be improved. It is important to be helpful and see the artwork as an extension of your inner self, that can be molded into a masterpiece, with insightful thoughts and honest and enriching art feedback. Also, it is as same as important to be open to receiving constructive feedback, with the objective of growing as an artist, expanding your artistic vision, and enhancing your creative skills.

Giving and receiving constructive feedback will not only help to improve the outcome of your project, but can also assure a smoother workflow in future projects. If everyone in the group has a certain part they work on, such as one does the modelling, another the texturing, yet another the animating, etc., informing others what might cause problems for the final product goes a long way. Learning what's important for other steps in the process (you are not that familiar with) widens your horizon. To really benefit from feedback, keep your criticism based on the work and the goal. At the same time you shouldn't take others critiques personal either.

Feedback is the most essential key to refine the design in an effective way. Create a Google sheet/ Cloud sheet and properly communicate this to the coworkers and seek for the suggestions/Feedback and the formats to be named accordingly to avoid confusions/contradictions. with this collective information of the feedback and suggestions the proper brainstorming to be done/ internal discussions to be carried out and the effective designs can be made from those suggestions/feedback.

A good hierarchical structure of the members of the team is crucial for conflict resolutions. Each member has a defined role, and responsabilities. That, paired with an enviroment of trust make the best scenario for conflict resolution.

The conflict resolution, often, is the only key to reach a professional result and to arrive to the goals! But the conflicts themselves are really important and bring us a lot of experiences, and they are fundamental for the know-how for each of us!

Conflicts, absolutely it's an unavoidable scenario in a Design environment but it can be tactfully resolved with some tricks. The contradiction to be listed, then the contradictory points to be properly detailed as a differentiation of the two contradictory scenarios. These differentiations to be analyzed and discussed internally (If it lies with internal Team) / Externally (if it lies with client), Proper problem in the contradiction to be identified and resolved through the proper communication.

Collaboration should foster continuous learning. Sharing knowledge and techniques helps team members improve their skills. Regular sessions where team members showcase new tools or methods encourage innovation and enhance workflows.

The best way to be in a process of continuous learning, is to be continuously working on the thing you want to learn. So try to keep yourself near that working enviroment as much as posible.

Continuous learning is the most important thing in our current time, especially with AI becoming as powerful as it does. Make sure that quality of life solutions and workarounds are documented and shared in a centralized database. It can be as easy as screenrecordings in a folder or as complex as an art-database in an intranet - doesn't matter. What matters is that ideas and knowledge are preserved and shared, especially amongst those who are collaborating on a regular basis.
