How do you assist team members in applying new skills effectively?

To help a sales rep struggling with skills apply what they've learned, I've implemented a "real-time application" approach. After each coaching session, I schedule live calls or meetings where they can immediately put new techniques into practice with clients. This hands-on experience reinforces their learning and builds confidence. I've also set up a mentorship program within the team, pairing them with seasoned reps who provide guidance and share practical insights. This combination of immediate application and peer support has made a significant difference in their skill development.

To help a struggling sales rep apply what they’ve learned, start by breaking down the key skills into manageable, actionable steps. Use role-playing scenarios to practice real-life situations, offering immediate feedback to reinforce the learning. Focus on one area of improvement at a time to avoid overwhelm, and set small, achievable goals to build confidence. Regularly review progress, celebrate wins, and encourage continuous practice so they can gradually integrate the skills into their daily routine.

If a sales rep is seasoned and they know what to do and still can't do it. Most of the time it wasn't a skill issue. It was something going on in life that was distracting them. So if I can, I would go on a break with them and just have a chat and share something shit in my life and hopefully they open up. And I would give them a way out if this is their first time like this that they can go home. Because bad performance affects the entire team. But I would also give them the other option that they should stay back and work hard because they said that they want to be great and to be great it means you have to be able to handle life and still perform. I'd remove expectations and focus them on not giving up today.

Show and tell. There is no faster way to improve a struggling sales reps skills then having them join sales calls and allowing them to be an observer! They will pick up insights from your mannerisms, your processes, the things you say and can even give you insights into what they observed from the client. Win Win.

To help a sales rep apply what they've learned, start by setting specific, actionable goals that align with their training. Use role-playing exercises to practice new skills in a safe environment, allowing them to gain confidence before engaging with real clients. Encourage them to develop a personalized action plan that outlines how they will implement their new techniques in actual sales scenarios. Schedule regular check-ins to review their progress, provide feedback, and adjust the plan as needed. Lastly, foster a supportive environment where they feel comfortable discussing challenges and celebrating successes along the way.
