Balancing sustainability and structural integrity in MEP design: Can you find the perfect harmony?
In MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing) design, marrying sustainability with structural integrity is key. Here's how to strike the balance:
How do you balance these critical aspects in your MEP designs?

On a current project we were not 100% sure where the air-conditioning units would be placed on a composite concrete slab and also not the final amounts or sizes needed. We assumed worst case in terms of weight of units, and also worked on the maximum number of units (the client's cooling requirements were not finalized at the time of structural construction). We did our analysis of the slab and the supporting structure by moving the units into different positions to determine the worst load cases. Even though this lead to a slight overdesign, this is a seriously fast-tracked project, and the time saved was successfully played off against the cost of the overdesign.
