Balancing studio recording and live show prep is challenging. How can you optimize your workflow effectively?

I also use very thought-out templates for most of the scenarios in my home studio, including country, rock, and orchestra shows I've scored, even for each show. My templates have the FX chains, master channel settings, and my standard aux channel loaded with my favorite FXs. It's faster to delete channels not needed for that project than to create and tweak. Then a new template is born;-) I do live shows mainly for bands I play in about six different venues. I have saved the mix scenes for each venue and included different vocalists. I make tweaks and updates almost every time I play a show. The saved scenes, at least for me, have been a time saver. Saving the scenes saves everything, including all effects and aux.

Time management is critical to ensuring prep and tasks are done. Create a to do list or a diary that has times down the side. This way you can block out times you need for various tasks. Don't procrastinate do the do. If you fail to prepare, prepare to fail

Everything depends on the material from the studio that a music act needs. A schedule is absolutely valuable, but before a schedule is made, write down the tasks needed, so you can begin to judge what will take what kind of time, and you can build up a schedule from there. I've found that figuring out what kind of click track is needed for the band, and who should be receiving/cueing said click is a very useful first step to figure out to help create a task list, that can then be turned into a production schedule when studio material is being utilized in a live show.

You must always remember that the first time someone hears your music it must excite them. Make your music infectious. It’s best to listen to classic songs and emulate the elements that make the songs memorable.

Wholeheartedly agree with this sentiment. Also, knowing what kind of equipment the band/music act can consistently travel with can help you know where your studio pre production focus csn be, and what kind of prep work is needed for said pre production. Also, if there's going to be a lot of dance and lighting requirements then getting a song that the band is happy with together to send to the other departments is crucial so said departments can rehearse their work on their own time as well. That way everyone can rehearse apart from each other, freeing up time, money, and energy that would have to be spent planning and putting on too many full production practices.

If you have an upcoming show, you might want to prioritise on it first. You can always come back to your productions and improve them. However, if you have an upcoming release prior to new gigs, you might even want to postpone the shows (if possible) to first feel confident on the music you are going to show to the world.

Absolutely a great idea, but! Remember! More often than not, entertainment world people often don't want to use a new communication platform, so always be ready to pivot back to simpler communication styles and scheduling. As much as I love a great Scrum or kanban style online board project management board, those tools might only be utilized by more technically minded people. Never be afraid to call, text, email, send smoke signals if you have to hahahaha! I love using Google calendar for a lot of scheduling as most people are extremely familiar with it. But even with that, verbal and phone text confirmations will always be most best, especially when other team mates are too focused on their tasks to use more advanced technological tools.

Your talent is above any technology. Choose the software and the tools you know the best, they will boost your confidence. Learn new things when you can, but avoid using new stuff if you don't want to stress so much.

Using the Tonal Energy app as a visual cue for tuning tendencies, harmonic analysis of my tone, and the variance in articulation has been beneficial for not just my own playing, but also in my teaching. My students have learned how to understand their sounds on a deeper level, and have a cue on what needs improving, as well as what they are doing well.

As a session musician, you’re limited to how much you can visualise anything as you are turning up to the studio to sight read whatever is put in front of you… but my advice? Just breathe. Most days, I take time in my morning to do some focused breathing, just fixing on the count in my head. Always clears my mind, and lowers my heart rate, which gives me a great base of calm for whatever the day may bring.

Again basically this is stating preparedness and confidence. Knowing your skillset and having confidence in your abilities is very important. This includes your natural and taught abilities also knowing your strengths and weaknesses which boosts your confidence and effectiveness.

Doing field recordings gives me space to mentally prepare without a lot of distractions. I'm mindful of my surroundings and the sounds that I'm capturing. But I'm also able to think about how I'll use those sounds when I get back into the studio. Visualizing your setups and workflows ahead of time will help unleash your creativity during recording sessions.

Playing live is not easy for everyone. You need to learn to identify which things calm you down and make you feel ready to perform in front of people. Some artists find using costumes or creating a character very useful. Be creative!

I have found that stretching my hands, wrists, and forearms in the morning, and before bed keeps me feeling loose and relaxed, especially when I have long practice sessions in the morning, and gigs in the evening. Also, I am usually carrying a baritone saxophone around my neck - lifting weights to keep my posture supported has made a huge improvement in my endurance.

For solo artists, hire a band that enjoys playing with you and enjoys you as a person. There are few experiences more boring than seeing a group of people onstage with you that look like they're just listening for the click.

Whether it′s a performer, venue owner or any committed partner - overcoming the mindset of having to ′do this alone′ is usually what gets me furthest...that′s how I′ve achieved the best opportunities in the first place...reaching out... honestly and truthfully...asking my audience - ′are they with me?′ Sometimes that person is simply whoever is listening... if they connect to what I′m sharing then I feel confident to take chances and ask - even as a soloist... Sometimes the journey feels lonely, scary and even lost - but as long as I am true to myself when I practise and perform then I know fans or collaborators will take me seriously...and when I commit fully - they usually do want to be part of the creative process in their own way!

What I’ve experienced with collaboration is that most potential individuals don’t understood the concept. Basically it’s a give and take situation along with constructive criticism and you must be very open minded irregardless of your experience and success. Your mindset, in my opinion should be “we’re all equal except for our strengths and weaknesses “ and the individuals must recognize this in the beginning. In Jesus Name.

Trust your team. The more you are in tune, the easier it will get. Rehearse as much as you can, until it's almost boring. Then, you will be more than ready!
