Balancing student data privacy and personalized learning: How can you navigate the conflicting needs?

Two measures that I would recommend based on my experience: 1. Training: Educators using data should be trained to understand the privacy law and ‘why’ the data protection is important. If not handled with sensitivity, it can cause safety guarding issues. While using data for personalised learning and drawing IEPs, educators should be mindful to not to discuss the same with other stakeholders who are not involved in that child’s learning journey. 2. Data privacy policy: Every school and institution should have Data Privacy and Protection policy in line with country’s law, and it should be part of employees contract. This will help build trust among parents. Protection of data should be legally binding.

I feel this is also an opportunity to engage in deep AI and Digital Literacy with students. Many students now have been on the internet and social media for most of their lives, but that doesn’t mean we should take their technological abilities for granted. We still need to provide robust training for students on how to interact online and what information to share and not to share. This is a foundational skill for utilizing any AI or EdTech platform. This should be required in classrooms now as we are moving towards an increasingly digital landscape, even with regard to textbooks and resources. Digital and AI literacy needs to be a foundational skill taught to students starting early.

I believe privacy is a need when plagiarism is prime where educational information is concerned and students require to submit assignments to gain credit points.

Creo que primero se debe analizar por qué es necesario recopilar cada tipo de dato y si algún dato no es esencial para los propósitos educativos o administrativos, debe evitarse para reducir el riesgo.

As a Resource Specialist Teacher that provides Services to students with an Individualized Education Plan, I try to build strong and positive connections with the students through our verbal interactions by engaging in informative conversations that help me develop personalized lesson planning and learning opportunities. These interactions provide me with essential information in creating a positive learning environment as well. Since my focus for students is IEP Goal achievement, some examples in Reading would be choosing passages focused on their curiosities, in Writing would be allowing them to choose what to write about (options given) and in Mathematics would be generating word problems geared towards familiar names/topics/things.

I really do not see a conflict with collecting data while tending the students’ needs. You collect the data so that you can better serve the student. Privacy laws and your responsibility are very clear. You only share your data with those involve serving the needs of the student with the sole purpose of helping the student. At my district we collect data by utilizing forms that record when we meet the goals that the student IEP has. We also record when accommodations have been used or refused and the outcome of those scenarios. This data is not published only used to help the student succeed. It is also used in meetings with the family and student to inform them whether or not the current accommodations are useful.

Rightly said,because the task of a surveyor is to collect quantifiable data and not interfere in the student's learning.Hence one needs to tread with care.

Effective data management is crucial for balancing privacy with personalized learning. Establishing clear data governance policies is key to protecting sensitive information and ensuring it is used ethically. Regular audits and monitoring help ensure these policies are followed, while data anonymization techniques reduce the risk of exposing personal information. This approach promotes a secure and personalized learning environment while respecting privacy.

Creo que la base principal para que funcione bien el tratamiento de datos es que todas las personas del instituto tengan bien claro la importancia de la privacidad de los datos. Si la base falla, todo el sistema se cae.

1. Encriptar los datos sensibles de los alumnos para proteger su información de posibles accesos no autorizados. 2. Implementar sistemas de autenticación seguros para garantizar que solo personal autorizado pueda acceder a la información de los alumnos. 3. Limitar el acceso a la información sensible de los alumnos a aquellos profesores y personal administrativo que realmente lo necesiten para realizar sus funciones. 4. Utilizar herramientas de protección contra malware y virus para prevenir posibles ataques informáticos que puedan comprometer la seguridad de los datos de los alumnos. 5. Establecer procedimientos de respuesta ante incidentes de seguridad para actuar de manera rápida y eficaz.

This includes not just educators and administrators, but also students, parents, and the wider school community. Open dialogue about the benefits and risks associated with data-driven personalization can help build a consensus on the best path forward. It’s important for everyone to feel that their concerns are heard and addressed in the policies and practices adopted by your institution. Understanding what data is important requires a much deeper conversation. There are endless data points that education can use to improve the learning process, but understanding what’s important to you and your district, based on school initiatives and leadership, should drive these points as the skeleton.

Plans for communicating student data in research are orchestrated in advance and approved by IRB committees and participants written consent. This ensures that students are not subject to harmful effects. Deidentified and pseudonymous information are utilized as options to protect students and comply with federal laws.

As a Resource Specialist Teacher and Case Manager for students with an Individualized Eduction Plan (IEP) that receive Services in the Resource Specialist Program (RSP) and/or Counseling/Speech/Occupational Therapy/Adaptive P.E., there are multiple Stakeholders involved be it from home (parent/guardian/caregiver), school (administrators/teachers/service providers) or outside Agencies. In the end, if the "home" stakeholders DISAGREE with what evidence was presented from the educational specialists assessments, teacher charted-data/observations and student work samples, they can check off WHAT they DISAGREE (options given). That case goes to Due Process and/or Internal Disciplinary Review (IDR) for an Audit and lawyers are usually involved.

Understanding GDPR and evolving data privacy laws is crucial for balancing personalized learning with student privacy. They define clear boundaries for data use, promoting trust and preventing legal issues. These regulations also push best practices, like collecting minimal data and requiring consent, which helps find the middle ground between personalization and privacy. For specific questions, don't hesitate to reach out to your institution's data privacy department. While legal understanding is key, it's just one piece of the puzzle.

I found that communicative approach method which I practiced was very useful for small classes and not for big classes,small classes consist of 40 students and big classes consist of 90 students

Navigating the conflict between student data privacy and personalized learning can be tricky: I would suggest to: * Move beyond student data as the sole source of personalization. Consider learning styles identified through self-assessment, teacher observation, and student choice in activities. * Instead of just collecting data on students, involve them in the process. Teach them about data privacy, responsible online behavior, and how their data can be used for personalized learning (with their consent!).
