To balance conflicting priorities among engineering teams and ensure project success, start by clearly defining project goals and priorities. Facilitate open communication to understand each team's concerns and perspectives. Use a structured approach, like prioritization frameworks (e.g., MoSCoW method), to assess and align priorities based on impact and urgency. Negotiate compromises and trade-offs where necessary, ensuring that key objectives are met. Regularly review progress and adjust priorities as needed to address emerging issues or changes. Keeping the focus on overall project goals and maintaining flexibility helps manage conflicting priorities effectively.

In order to compare priorities between projects, we need to be able to talk in a common currency. It's very difficult to compare the benefit of two items when they're measure in different ways. We can work to align the currency of value for all pieces of work. The most obvious currency to use is money, but there are other core currencies. Take a database upgrade, vs building a new product feature - what's the monetary benefit of each? Maybe the product feature has an upside of $10,000 per annum, but the risk associated with not doing a DB upgrade has a risk cost of $100,000. Now we can compare the two. In the event that both streams of work cannot be parallelised, the DB upgrade takes priority as it has the highest monetary benefit.

Balancing conflicting priorities among engineering teams requires a clear strategy and transparent communication. Begin by aligning all teams on the company’s overarching goals and how each project contributes to those objectives. Prioritize tasks based on impact and deadlines, ensuring each team understands their role in the project’s success. Regular check-ins and cross-team collaboration help address any dependencies or bottlenecks early on. Encourage teams to voice concerns or potential conflicts, and foster a culture of compromise and flexibility when adjusting timelines or resources. By maintaining a shared vision and promoting open dialogue, you can drive the success of all projects without sacrificing quality or deadlines.

Ideally, we should align all projects and priorities with the company’s overall success, using high-level OKRs as a guide. However, conflicts between teams can still arise. To address this, it's important to use a consistent framework to evaluate priorities based on their impact. Prioritization methods like MoSCoW can help us to ensure that we focus on what matters most while staying adaptable to change. Clear communication and collaboration are essential to effectively resolve trade-offs and balance priorities so that each team contributes to the overall success of the company.
